Welcome to my personal blog. I’d been planning to do this for a long time, but there was always work, errands, or something else that “kept me from” doing it. I had a few initiatives like my Medium profile where I mostly have content in English, but I wanted a place where I could publish my thoughts without worrying so much about the “algorithm” and the pressure of seeing how much reach a story had.
This is a more personal space where I can do the work I enjoy most without having to abandon my Medium profile, where I aim for the content to reach a different range of people with other interests.
Who am I?
I could put the same thing you’d find on my About page, but it wouldn’t make much sense to repeat the same information—I want to tell you more deeply who Edwin Garcés is.
I’ve lived less time than many people who know me would think, close to technology. Although I had contact with computers in my last years of elementary school—around 2006—I was never really in touch with technology as such, just the bare minimum to do some assignment or a very small Google search. I didn’t have internet at home until I turned 17 (in 2011). So I’ve been truly connected to technology for a relatively short time.
I studied a B.S. in Computer Science, but I started far behind compared to many of my classmates. I had never seen any kind of code or pseudocode; I didn’t even know how a web page worked. Clearly, that was a problem, because I began without knowing what to expect from the university or what was expected of me by the end of the degree. I actually wanted to study Literature, which was totally removed from this path.
Thanks to many ups and downs—and help from one of my uncles—I was able to steer myself a bit toward this technological universe, where I’ve found pleasant surprises. I’ve come across many barriers I haven’t been able to cross alone, but thanks to my family I’ve been able to keep moving forward, overcoming many obstacles that only the adversity of a life far from technology could put in my way.
So that’s who I am: a person who, despite adversity, has always held his head high and kept going, no matter how hard it’s been. I’m someone who has learned to ask for help when it’s needed and to accept that changes and obstacles won’t stop appearing—but that no matter what happens, he will always find in his family the strength he needs to keep going.
